Who We Are
Ratchet Wrenching started in June 2017 with a 20ft cargo trailer, a 1991 Dodge Cummins 2500, and a whole lot of determination. That old Dodge and trailer became a service truck (with maybe a few more trucks and trailers along the way).
Meet the Team

Justin Bell
Co-Owner & Lead Heavy-Duty Mechanic
Justin has lived and breathed engines his entire life. Starting his career in high school, he worked at a local mechanic shop before moving into the oil and gas sector. Eventually, his path led him to the railway industry, where he found his true passion.
Going out on his own was always a dream, and in 2017—with Sierra’s support—Justin turned that dream into reality by co-founding Ratchet Wrenching. Since then, he has built a reputation as a trusted, hands-on heavy-duty mechanic known for tackling some of the most challenging and unique Maintenance-of-Way (MOW) equipment in the field.
Justin has a particular love for tampers, machines that perfectly reflect the precision and strength he brings to his work. In 2024, his dedication to the industry was recognized when he received the Future of Railway Award, highlighting his skill, innovation, and leadership within the rail community.
When he isn’t fixing, welding, or fabricating something for work, Justin can often be found helping Sierra on the farm, proving that his passion for hard work extends far beyond the tracks.

Sierra Chalmers
Co-Owner & Operations Manager
Sierra’s story started with a love for classic trucks and cars. As a teenager, she worked as a parts technician and dreamed of someday owning a parts store and a farm. Life had other plans, though—and bigger ones.
When Ratchet Wrenching began to grow, Sierra left her job to focus fully on the company and their farm. She quickly became more than “just the administrator”—she’s the driving force behind operations, organization, and logistics. On any given day, you’ll find her running the business side, jumping in wherever she’s needed in the shop or field, and balancing it all with raising her daughter and working on the farm.
Her entrepreneurial vision didn’t stop there. Sierra also created Ballast & Steel Apparel, a brand built for and inspired by the railroading community. What started as an idea to make bold, rail-themed clothing turned into a platform that celebrates and supports the tight-knit railroad industry. Through Ballast & Steel, Sierra leads initiatives like Railroaders Supporting Railroaders, combining apparel with community-driven spotlights and support programs that give back to the people who keep the tracks moving.
Outside of business, Sierra is deeply involved in her community. She serves as a Director on the Didsbury Agricultural Society board, where she helps put on the local rodeo—often running the beer gardens and volunteering at community events. Her commitment to giving back is just as strong locally as it is within the rail industry, blending hard work, leadership, and community spirit.

Jonathan Morley
Field Mechanic
Jonathan grew up surrounded by engines, spending much of his childhood in his dad’s automotive shop. It was there he discovered his passion for mechanics—especially Cummins engines—as well as his deep fascination with trains, automobiles, and planes. He’s the kind of guy who can rattle off a tail number, train number, or engine spec without hesitation, whether it’s Cummins or John Deere.
After high school, Jonathan completed the two-year Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) program before joining Ratchet Wrenching in 2021. At first, he thought he’d be working directly on trains and admits he was a little disappointed to learn otherwise—but he’s since discovered a whole new side of the railway industry through Maintenance-of-Way (MOW) equipment. The role has allowed him to expand his skills while still working closely with one of his greatest passions.
Jonathan’s curiosity, technical knowledge, and drive to learn make him an invaluable part of the Ratchet Wrenching team, both in the shop and in the field.
-
Ryley Kerr
Field Mechanic
Ryley joined Ratchet Wrenching in October 2023 and quickly earned the nickname “Mini Justin” for the way he jumped right into the work and picked up MOW equipment like he’d been around it for years.
A family man and farmer at heart, Ryley brings a grounded, steady attitude to the team. He’s not one to get rattled—especially if the job’s getting done and everyone’s moving forward. With a background of diverse experiences, he adds valuable knowledge to the crew and has become a strong fit both in the shop and out in the field.
Ryley’s easygoing nature, mechanical skill, and willingness to take on anything make him an asset to Ratchet Wrenching and a dependable hand for our customers.

Shelby Chalmers
Office Administrator
Shelby may be Sierra’s younger sister, but she’s also her right hand. The two have been inseparable since their teenage years—whether it was getting into mischief, raising kids side by side, or helping each other chase down goals. So when Ratchet Wrenching needed extra help in the office, the choice was obvious: the one person who can read Sierra’s mind 90% of the time.
Shelby officially joined the team in August 2024 and quickly took over the administration office. She has a natural talent for organization, attention to detail, and—most importantly—keeping the boys in check with their paperwork. Her ability to anticipate what’s needed before anyone asks makes her an essential part of the operation.
